One of the central figures of the modern Japanese filmmaking. In 1980s in Japan he was considered to be an iconic underground-style film director.

In 1997 he became internationally renowned for his film called "Cure", the premiere of which took place at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Since that time each of his films has been taking part in a competition of some very prestige film festival: Berlin, Rotterdam, Venice, Cannes.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa has got two prizes of the Cannes Film Festival: the prize of "Un Certain Regard" section jury for the film "Tokyo Sonata" in 2008, as well as the best director prize for his film "Journey to the Shore" in 2015.
