In 2006, Maria Elkina graduated from the Faculty of Theory and History of Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Her main spheres of interest are architectural and urbanist theories. Since 2011 she has written about architecture and urbanism in specialized publications and popular press, such as Republic, Delovoy Peterburg, arch:speech, Strelka Magazine, and Sobaka.ru.
