In 2006, Maria Elkina graduated from the Faculty of Theory and History of Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Her main spheres of interest are architectural and urbanist theories. Since 2011 she has written about architecture and urbanism in specialized publications and popular press, such as Republic, Delovoy Peterburg, arch:speech, Strelka Magazine, and Sobaka.ru.

Maria Elkina curated the exhibition Petersburg 2103, which presented the history of urban development in St. Petersburg and its possible new prospects. Author of a popular book Architecture: How to Understand It.
