Born in Moscow in 1946. In 1969 he began his acting career in A. Konchalovsky's film "The Boy and the Dove" (the Bronze Lion of St. Mark at the IFF in Venice). He has starred in A. Tarkovsky's films "Ivan's Childhood" and "Andrei Rublev". Laureate of IFFs in Venice, Cannes, Berlin, San Francisco, Oberhausen, Acapulco, Moscow, Yugoslavia... Winner of the Lenin Komsomol Prize.
1961–1964 — artist of the Mossovet State Academic Theatre.
1967 – graduated from the acting department of the B.V. Shchukin Theatre School majoring as a theatre and film artist.
1967–1968 — artist of the Lenin Komsomol Theatre.
He has starred in 70 films: Introduction to Life, The Blizzard, A Hero of Our Time, A Boy and a Girl, Two Comrades Were Serving, Risk, Theft, Legend, Mama Married, Gambler, Little tragedies, Wartime Romance, Bambi’s Childhood, Bambi's Youth, Fyodor Tyutchev’s Love and Truth, Master and Margarita, Gogol. Blizhayshiy, Admiral, and others. In 1975 he graduated from VGIK majoring as a film and television director.
He directed the following films based on his owns scripts: The Huntsman, Vanka-Cain (from the film Poshekhonskaya Starina), The Choice, Circle, the author's film Lermontov, Vsyo Vperedi.
