Yasushi specialized Russian Avant-gard theatre and finished doctoral course in Theatre Studies of Meiji University in 1988.

He published many articles on theatre historiography, intercultural theatre and production analysis on modern and contemporary Russian and Japanese theatres in many anthologies such as Transnational Performance, Identity and Mobility in Asia, Adapting Chekhov The Text and its Mutations, The Local meets the Global in Performance and others in English, and also The Age of Avant-Garde, The Theory of Japanese Arts, Performance in Post-modern Culture in Japanese. He recently edited Modernization of Asian Theatres Process and Tradition and Kabuki and Russia in Revolution.
His recent interest is contemporary interaction among Asian theatres, Asian theatre performativity and its historiography. He serves convener of Asian Theatre Working Group from 2009 and the president of Japanese Society for Theatre Research from 2014.
